Thank you so much for creating a gift for me! ❤️

Think of this as bonus info - everything essential is in my AO3 signup (the italicized paragraphs below), but I've expanded a bit on my DNWs and other details.

General Notes:
  • Treats (fic or art) are enabled and welcome!
  • I'm happy to read any rating and would love smut for any of the ship requests
  • Feel free to use anything from my previous exchange letters and/or list of favourite tropes
DNWs:
characters under 16 in sexual relationships; incest (cousin relationships are fine); modern/mundane setting AUs; non-canonical character deaths; noncon/rape depicted on the page (rape mentioned as part of a character's backstory is ok, and mutual dubcon scenarios are great); omegaverse dynamics; tragic endings (open, ambiguous, or bittersweet are all fine)

Dear Yoda,

Thank you so much for creating a gift for me! To be clear, this letter is completely optional - everything essential is in my signup - but I've expanded a bit on my likes and DNWs in case that helps.

  • Treats are enabled and welcome!

  • Ratings & Content: For fic, I'm happy to read any rating from General to Explicit; smut for any of the ship requests would be fantastic. For art, I prefer suggestive over explicit, i.e. no exposed genitalia or heavy gore/wounds

  • I've watched Andor so feel free to use that canon, but I'd be just as happy with something based only on the OT/Rogue One where applicable

  • Some art likes: in-universe 'found images' (propaganda, holographs, etc); napping together or wearing each others' clothes; strong colour & lighting contrasts; snow/winter scenes; sparring or lightsaber duels

  • Some narrative likes: character(s) not used to being cared about; competence kink; 'first times' of any type; heists; trapped on a damaged spaceship or stranded on a deserted planet; weird uses & side-effects of the Force (including 'the Force made them do it')

  • Some smut likes: character study through porn; clothed sex; femdom; honour bondage; reunion sex; touch-starved characters overwhelmed

  • Feel free to look at previous exchange letters for May the 4th and Star Wars Rare Pairs if you want other ideas; I'd be happy to receive anything based on a previous prompt

  • DNWs: character or ship bashing; completely hopeless endings (open, ambiguous or bittersweet are all good); modern/non-Star Wars AUs in fic (but they're welcome in art); noncon/rape (mutual dubcon is great); omegaverse dynamics; V-shaped threesomes

Dear Yoda,

Thank you so much for creating something for me! Keep in mind that any prompts are suggestions, not must-haves; I'd love to receive whatever you feel really excited and enthused about making.

I'm open to and happy to receive treats, including art.

My requests haven't changed much in the past few years, so feel free to look through my list of bulletproof tropes and previous exchange letters if you'd like some more ideas.

  • Canon & Spoilers: My canon knowledge is pretty much restricted to the movies & live-action TV series, so if EU characters and concepts appear, you may need to explain them in more detail. I’m currently watching Andor so incorporating elements from that show would be fine.

  • Ratings & Content: I'm happy to read any rating from General to Explicit; PWP welcome! And I enjoy both get-together and established relationship stories.

  • General Likes: role-reversal AUs; “the Force made them do it”; Jedha and the city of niJedha; snowy and/or winter settings; epistolary fic (i.e. in-universe reports, texts, etc); political maneuvering; touch-starved characters; mutual pining; bed-sharing; hair touching/grooming; forehead kisses

  • DNWs: A/B/O dynamics; noncon/rape (dubcon as noted in likes is fine); unhappy endings (ambiguous or bittersweet is fine); character/ship bashing; modern/non-Star Wars AUs in fic (canon-divergent & “everyone lives” AUs are great, and I love setting AUs in art); V-shaped relationships in threesomes

So there’s a fanworks charity auction in aid of Ukraine running and I signed up.

If interested, you can bid on me here or browse other offers here. Bids close on May 30.

Though I mostly write Star Wars fic under this pseud, I’ve written for two decades in fandoms huge (LOTR) to medium (Austen, LMM) to tiny (several Yuletide-sized book fandoms). I’m not a fast writer, but I’m reliable; I have yet to default on an exchange commitment.

This is a bit nerve-wracking because I’ve never done an auction before, but I’m very excited and really keen to work with my bidder to develop a story that’s just what they were hoping for! (And the worst that can happen is no-one bids, in which case I’ll donate the money myself.)

Hello, dear creator, and thank you so much for making me a gift! I'm really excited to see what you create.

Any prompts in my signup are always optional; if something else inspires you, feel free to go offscript. In case it helps, here's a list of tropes (both plot- and smut-related) that I love, regardless of fandom or ship:

Dear Yoda,

Thank you so much for creating something special for me! I've tried to give prompts that could work for both fic and art, as much as possible. And keep in mind that all of these prompts are suggestions which can be mixed and matched in any combination. If none of them inspire you, I'd love to receive whatever you feel excited and enthused about making.

I’m going to attempt to write 4 exchange fics, finish 2 WIPs, and write one new fic before the end of the year, or approximately 25,000 words altogether.

Considering my normal writing pace, this is insanely ambitious; I literally printed out a calendar of the next 3 months and blocked out what I need to draft/edit/post each week in order to make it work. It’s just barely possible, in theory and if everything else in my life runs smoothly (she says, knocking on wood).

Plus, recent comments on True and False have added to my guilt about not having finished that yet (more than 2 years after I posted the first chapter, yeeesh) so I might try to cram that in as well. Although the biggest problem with that story isn’t finding the time to write, it’s the fact I can’t cross the gaping chasm between where I am and the (already written) end.

Unfortunately, this objective means I won’t be able to accept “trick or treat” prompts for Hallowe'en the way I’ve done for the past two years, which makes me sad... perhaps I can do something similar in the spring instead.

Overly ambitious schedule )

September was a great month for books! I read a lot of solid stuff, some of which are definite contenders for Yuletide nominations/requests.

I discovered that one short story a day at lunchtime is a good way to get some reading in at work, so I'm currently making my way through Orange World.

I fell in love with Jasmine Guillory as soon as I read The Wedding Party; it was such a pleasure to read a charming contemporary romance with diverse & realistic characters that didn't insult my intelligence or lean on outdated gender roles/stereotypes. The Proposal was even better (also, I need a Rogue One fan to read it and tell me whether my suspicion the hero owes something to a certain Mexican actor is plausible).

I'd been eagerly waiting for The Iron Dragon's Mother since I heard it was coming out, and it was marvellous if a bit episodic in nature. Swanwick's surreal vision of "industrialized" Faerie is one of the most original and immersive fantasy worlds I've ever encountered.

On a completely opposite note, I've been on a streak of excellent but emotionally harrowing non-fiction lately. What You Have Heard is True is Carolyn Forché's memoir of friendship with an El Salvadoran activist. Stunning prose, as you'd expect from a poet, precise and carefully controlled in its brutality. Midnight in Chernobyl, on the other hand, was blandly written but the narrative is unbelievably tense and gripping.

Next up: Kill Creek, a good old-fashioned haunted house story for Hallowe'en.

The volunteer gig was extra stressful this year because of covering for my partner's absence, a heat wave with bonus tornado warnings, vendor fuck-ups, plus the general headaches of dealing with big-name performers & their micro-managing managers. I didn't accomplish any of the personal stuff (like writing) I wanted to get done during my vacation. It continues to be blazingly hot & humid, and our 100 year old house doesn't have air-conditioning. Also, the spouse & I had our huge annual summer blow-up due to the aforementioned stress & heat.

On the other hand, we actually resolved a perennial source of conflict in a way that we're both happy with. My parents' visit was lovely, and they helped out with a couple of big home maintenance jobs. Hundreds of dollars and two weeks of oral antibiotics later, my daughter's rabbit has made a full recovery, stunning the vet, who admitted he'd thought one eye at least was a write-off. Whenever the bun finally passes away (of old age, no doubt) I think I want to preserve one of his feet, because he's obviously made of concentrated luck. And [profile] multifandomdrabblefest turned out to be a great experience: I posted six drabbles, got lovely comments on all of them, and my own gifts were amazing! I'll definitely be participating in that event again.

Volunteer crew meeting is tonight, after which comes a day or two of calm before the storm, and then I'll be busy and/or camping with limited internet access for a week. And then my parents are coming to stay with us for a visit, so I'll be basically absent until July 21.

I did sign up for [community profile] multifandomdrabble and have drafted 3 treats plus my assignment so far. I'll polish those up over the weekend when I have a spare hour or so.

I also passed the halfway point of my [community profile] getyourwordsout challenge! I've worked on my novel project 62 days so far this year.

But it's not looking good for my pledge to post a chapter of each WIP by the end of July... I'm almost finished Chapter Four of Departed Acts, but I won't know whether it's publishable as-is until I manage to finish more of the last two chapters. And I've written ~10,000 words of Chapter Four of True & False, but they're all false starts.

(I also need to remember to donate to Amnesty International in memory of my friend's father, so I'm noting that down here.)

I just spent 5 hours outside in 30C weather at a Canada Day festival for newcomers and I. am. wiped.

It was a great event; we talked up the library and gave away ~200 kids books, but right now I need a cold shower and a cold beer--possibly at the same time--before I can feel human again.

It's one of the highest points of stress in my volunteer position, and my partner co-ordinator isn't available this year due to a family emergency, so I really don't have the brain power to spare for any creative writing at the moment.

Still, I've been trying to work on my WIPs a tiny bit every day--just 15 minutes or a couple of sentences, whatever comes first. The issue is that I can tread water that way, but I can't develop any forward momentum. And I feel like I desperately need outside assistance to make any significant progress; someone to help me talk through the mess and reassure me that it's not unsalvageable.

And yet I couldn't resist the temptation to sign up for [community profile] multifandomdrabble... I do love the form, and I can manage an assignment of 100 words in a day if I have to.

I've also committed to posting Tolkien recs on the [community profile] fanart_recs community during August, once things have quieted down. Consider this a plea to link me any art you love!

The book club that I've belonged to for over 20 years ended this month. 😢 It had simply run its course; all of the other members are older than me, so several have retired and are living in other provinces full or part-time, and one is working out of the country so often that she's almost never able to make it. The final meeting was about as perfect as it could be: good book, great discussion, great food on a perfect June night outdoors. When we're in the same city, I'm sure we'll continue to get together on an ad hoc basis to drink wine and talk about books, but it won't be quite the same.

Speaking of books, I've read 42 so far this year--only 10 more to meet my goal. It's been very satisfying getting back into the habit of regular reading. Some highlights from the first half of the year:
  • Six of Crows
  • The Poppy War
  • The Wild Dead
  • Lost Children Archive
  • The Bone Woman

And I'm looking forward to Ayesha at Last next.

Otherwise, I've had to quit keeping up with news from south of the border because it fills me with impotent rage and horror. I can't call my congressperson, demonstrate, vote, or do anything to affect change (other than donate to advocacy organizations) and there's little point in lobbying my government to apply pressure, as the current US administration is clearly immune to any international shaming. And like epidemics, American politics tend to take hold up here eventually, so there's that to worry about as well.
incognitajones: (writing: notebook)
...hard to believe we're almost at the midpoint of the year!

My goals for May were to polish off three prompt fills I owed and to participate in the "7 Stories in 7 Days" event, and I managed to accomplish most of those. (Details on the 7 Days experience.)

I did post 2 out of the 3 prompt fills, and sent the third one to the friend who'd asked for it. A few other people had seemed interested too, but I can't bring myself to publish it on AO3 right now; instead, I'll probably post a note to let people know they can have the Gdocs link if they want.

Looking ahead, the last week of June and the first two weeks of July are always insanely busy with an annual volunteering gig, and then I have a week of holiday during which my parents will be visiting. So my goal for the next two months is pretty undemanding: to finish a chapter of each WIP by the end of July.

I'm also considering signing up for a couple of low-commitment exchanges--[community profile] multifandomdrabble and/or [community profile] everywoman--that would force me to write something different, since all I seem inspired to write on my own at the moment is angsty romance for a ship in a declining fandom.

General progress notes
  • I've kept plugging away at my [community profile] getyourwordsout commitment, slowly but steadily.
  • I'm still keeping a regular writing date with myself on Sunday afternoons though I haven't posted about it recently. If anyone's around at those times and wants to join in, feel free!
  • I also heard from a fandom friend who asked me to read & comment on their original novel later this summer, which is exciting! I love beta-reading.
incognitajones: (Default)
  • our Pride display at the library is pretty f'in awesome! it features big rainbow letters with feathers stuck to them (we were going to use balloons but they kept popping; the feathers worked out way better in the end) and a backdrop of multicoloured circles that's super eye-catching--I've seen a lot of people stopping to take photos of it or selfies in front of it 😃
  • think I'm going to sign up for [community profile] multifandomdrabble
  • am super annoyed with both my children for housekeeping-related reasons. the practice of doing the bare minimum requested and relying on their sibling/parents to pick up the slack is really obvious and continues no matter how many times we call them out on it 😡
  • still can't bring myself to post any of my recent writing
  • volunteering at an outdoor concert on Saturday... and of course the forecast is calling for an 80% chance of thunderstorms ⛈
